Meet the Team
Caroline Wolhuter – Research Manager
Caroline graduated from the University of Bristol with a PhD in Policy Studies in 2003. She also has a BA (Industrial Sociology & History, 1994) and MSc (Development Planning, 1996) from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. She has worked in both England and South Africa developing, evaluating and implementing a range of policy programmes. Her research interests include community cohesion & integration, gender relations, local economic development and urban regeneration. Since moving to Ashram in March 2007 her work has focused on women’s health and safety, mainstreaming community cohesion, citizenship and intercultural community design.

Edward Evans – Policy Manager
Edward graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2003 with a First Class MA Honours in Social Anthropology. Since then he has worked in both corporate and social research, developing his quantitative and qualitative research skills whilst working in the USA, Central America, Nigeria and the UK. Edward’s research interests include conflict, human rights, refugees and mental health. Since joining Ashram in July 2007 Edward has focused on community cohesion, preventing violent extremism, identity and sport. He recently co-authored the Ashram report ‘Unveiling’ Football.

Lucy Terry – Policy Assistant
Lucy graduated from the University of Manchester in July 2008, with a First-Class BA (Hons) in History. Since then she has volunteered in local politics, building up her knowledge and engaging with local communities. She was also employed as a researcher for a capacity-building organisation working with charities addressing social disadvantage. Lucy joined Ashram in June 2009, and supports both Ed Evans and Jas Bains in a variety of areas, including the residents’ newsletter, updating this website and co-ordinating and developing www.socialbreakfast.org, Ashram's new youth engagement site.

Zoe Jubert - Project Officer
Zoe graduated from the University of Birmingham in July 2009, with a BA (Hons) in History and Politics. Immediately after graduating she worked for the University of Birmingham for a short while coordinating the Welcome Week for New International students. She then moved on to work for a Regeneration Consultant, working on many projects including the production of a series of good practice DVDs and also the coordination of a program of public sector training events. Zoe then joined Ashram in April 2010 to take up the role of Project Officer for the Policy and Research team, with her main role being the administration and coordination of Ashram's training programme.

Malcolm Coall – Training Coordinator
Malcolm joined Ashram in January 2010 to develop and deliver training in the field of supporting vulnerability and community resilience to reduce the risk of extremism. Previously he worked in policing for 31 years, developing highly effective partnerships and teams across a range of sectors including the public, private & third sectors. He holds a law degree LLB, in addition to a qualification in management and training. He holds Chartered manager status and is a leadership and management consultant. In 2007 Malcolm was awarded Regional Manager of the Year for the West Midlands and then 'National Chartered Manager of the Year’ by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in recognition of his exceptional performance and organisational impact. He has also chaired a number of Local Strategic Partnerships, throughout Birmingham, with a particular emphasis on community safety and improving community confidence.

William Lilley - Development Officer
William is an accredited member of the Institute of Fundraising and a passionate advocate of civil society and voluntary organisations. Over the past few years William has worked tirelessly in developing grass roots social enterprises that provide culturally sensitive mental health services in some of the most deprived areas in the UK. As well as working for Ashram, he also volunteers for various local campaigns and initiatives and is a keen writer and blogger. William joined Ashram to assist in the project development and sustainability of the departments many community projects and initiatives.

Khalila Ismail - Development Officer
Khalila Ismail joined Ashram in March 2010 as the team’s Development Officer where she is responsible for the development of training packages. She graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in Computer Science but her passion for volunteering led her to work in the humanitarian sector. She has worked in both England and Kenya in developing and implementing a range of projects. A champion for a grassroots approach to community development, her interests lie in volunteerism, gender relations, conflict and community cohesion.
